Cofounder search for international founders in Helsinki

International founders in Helsinki face a specific version of the cofounder problem: their existing network does not supply Finnish candidates, and the Finnish startup community has its own operating culture that takes time to learn. The directory was built specifically for this situation.

Why international founders face a specific cofounder problem

The cofounder search is largely a network problem. Most Finnish founders find their cofounder through university connections, previous colleagues, or introductions from investors they already know. International founders who arrive in Finland without those entry points are effectively starting the search from zero, regardless of how experienced they are.

Helsinki is the most international city in Finland, which helps: it has the highest concentration of English-speaking founders, the largest startup community, and the events and hubs (Maria 01, Slush, Startup Sauna) that draw both Finnish and international participants. But events alone are not a reliable cofounder-finding mechanism. The relationships that lead to a founding partnership usually develop over weeks or months, not in a networking session.

What to look for in a local cofounder

International founders often frame the local cofounder search as finding someone who "knows Finland." That is too vague to be useful. More specifically, what you usually need depends on where you are in the company:

  • Pre-product: a cofounder who can introduce you to potential Finnish customers or who has credibility in the vertical you are targeting.
  • Post-product, pre-funding: a cofounder who knows the Finnish VC community and can accelerate introductions, or who has navigated Business Finland grants before.
  • Operational: a cofounder who handles the administrative and legal side of operating in Finland, which frees you to focus on the product or customers.

Finnish startup culture: what to know in advance

Finnish founders tend to be direct but reserved in first meetings. The culture is less pitch-heavy than, for example, the US or UK startup scene, and more skeptical of early excitement without evidence. A conversation that feels flat to an American or British founder is often a normal Finnish evaluation meeting. The relationship usually develops through a few practical interactions (a trial collaboration, a shared project) rather than quickly.

Finding a cofounder without a local network

The directory is designed for exactly this situation: public profiles, no sign-up required to browse, and a direct messaging flow that does not require a warm introduction. See the Helsinki cofounder page for who is currently listed, or browse the full directory. For general guidance on the cofounder search process, see how cofounder matching works.
