Finding an AI cofounder in Finland

"AI cofounder" usually means one of two different people: someone with real applied-ML or research experience who can build a genuinely novel model or pipeline, or a strong generalist engineer who can build effectively on top of existing AI APIs and tooling. Deciding which one your company actually needs, before you search, narrows the pool to people who are a realistic match rather than everyone with "AI" in their bio.

Two different people both get called "AI cofounder"

The first is someone with genuine applied machine learning or research experience, able to design a model, evaluate a dataset, or build a training pipeline from first principles. This person is rare, usually well-employed, and worth the search only if your product's actual differentiation is the model itself.

The second is a strong generalist software engineer who is fluent with modern AI tooling and APIs and can build a genuinely useful product on top of them without needing to train anything from scratch. For most startups where AI is a feature rather than the entire product, this is the more realistic and more findable match.

Deciding honestly which of these two you need, before writing your profile, is the single biggest factor in whether the search goes well. A vague "looking for an AI cofounder" post attracts a pool of people who don't know which one you mean either.

Where Finland's AI talent is

Helsinki has the largest concentration, through university research groups and a growing set of AI-focused product companies. Oulu's wireless and signal-processing research background overlaps with certain applied-AI problems, particularly anything touching sensor data or embedded inference. In both cases, most of the strongest people are currently employed rather than actively searching for a cofounder role, so the same rule applies here as everywhere else in a cofounder search: be specific about the problem, not the label.

Where to look

Browse the directory filtered for technical backgrounds and read what each person is looking for, many technical profiles will mention AI/ML experience directly in their "looking for" text even without a dedicated filter for it.
